Wenige Musiker lassen ihr Publikum mit dem Gefühl
zurück etwas Unglaubliches erlebt zu haben. Der
Komponist, Produzent, Perfomer, Organisator,
Innovator UND Bassist JAMAALADEEN TACUMA tut genau
das. Der aus Philadelphia stammende Musiker hat sich
schon immer darüber hinweggesetzt, was von einem
Bassisten erwartet wurde. Tacuma hat einfach das
künstlerische Potential dieses Instruments neu
definiert.
In der Mitte der Siebziger Jahre fiel sein freier
kreativer Umgang mit dem Bass dem legendären
Saxophonisten Ornette Coleman auf. Tacuma wurde
Mitglied von Colemans Band Prime Time, der er von da
an für zwölf Jahre angehörte und auf den
legendären Aufnahmen "Dancin in Your Head",
"Body Meta", und "Of Human Feelings"
mitspielte.
Als Solist begann Tacuma 1983 mit seinem Debut-Album
- das er schlicht "Showstopper" nannte -
musikalisch prägende Spuren zu hinterlassen.
Etliche weitere Aufnahmen folgten, wie zum Beispiel:
Renaissance Man (1984), Music World (1987), JukeBox
(1989), Cosmetic, Boss of the Bass - welche seine
Fähigkeit, zwischen verschiedenen musikalischen
Genres zu wechseln, bestätigten. Auch von den
Kritiker erhielt Tacuma höchstes Lob für seine
Musikalität und sein künstlerisches Wirken. 1981
erhielt er die meiste Anzahl Stimmen, die je ein
E-Bassist in der Kategorie "Talent Deserving
Wilder Recognition"der Down Beat Kritiker-Poll
erhalten hatte.
Jamaaladeen Tacuma nahm auf und performte auf nahezu
jedem Kontinent, in Zusammenarbeit mit Musikern aus
Japan, Korea, Europa und dem mittleren Osten. Im
September 2007 veröffentlichte er eine neue CD mit
dem Titel "THE FLAVORS OF THELONIOUS MONK
RELOADED", eine musikalische Hommage an den
großen Pianisten und Komponisten Thelonious Monk,
sowie außerdem im Oktober 2007 eine neue CD mit der
Gruppe "FREE FORM FUNKY FREQS" mit dem
Gitarristen Vernon Reid (Living Color) und G. Calvin
Weston (John Laurie, Medesky, Martin & Wood) am
Schlagzeug, unter dem Titel " URBAN MYTHOLOGY"
auf Thirsty Ear Records.
Außerdem spielte und produzierte er für viele
amerikanische und europäische Jazz/Funk Musiker.
Die CD "Mirakles" von Derek Bailey, G.
Calvin Weston & Tacuma wurde vom All Music Guide
als eine der wichtigsten Veröffentlichungen des
Jahres 2000 bezeichnet. Vor kurzem veröffentlichte
er eine CD mit dem Titel "DUST" mit Peter
Murphy von BAUHAUS auf dem Label Metropolis.
Jamaaladeen Tacuma ist außerdem als Komponist und
Koproduzent auf der neuen CD des World Saxophone
Quartets - erschienen 2006 bei Justin Time Records
mit dem Titel "Political Blues" -
vertreten, mit dem Song "BLUE DIAMOND".
Tacuma arbeitete mit einer Anzahl talentierter
Musiker zusammen wie den Gitarristen Jeff Beck,
Carlos Santana, Marc Ribot, James Blood Ulmer, Jean
Paul Bourelly und Derek Bailey, sowie den
Saxophonisten Pharaoh Sanders, Grover Washingon Jr.,
David Murray, Odean Pope, Wolfgang Puschnig und
James Carter. Seine weiteren musikalischen
Tätigkeiten umfassen Orchesterkonzerte in der
Carnegie Hall geleitet von Anthony Davis, bin hin zu
Aufnahmen und Auftritten mit der Hip Hop Rap Gruppe
The Roots, sowie mit DJ King Britt und DJ Logic.
Tacuma teilte die Bühne mit dem großen
Philantrophen Bill Cosby auf dem JVC Jazz Festival
und bei der David Letterman Show, wo Tacuma der Band
Leiter des Abends war. Er hat auch Musik für die TV
Hit Show "The Cosby Show"geschrieben. Er
arbeitete mit den Dichtern Jayne Cortez, Quincy
Troupe und Amiri Baraka zusammen und hat gemeinsam
mit der R&B Neo Soul Gruppe KINDRED aus
Philadelphia den Song "WOMEN FIRST" für
ihre neue CD "IN THIS LIFE TOGETHER" auf
dem Label Hidden Beach/Motown (2006) geschrieben und
produziert.
Als Bassist von Wolfgang Puschnigs Alpine Aspects
glänzet Tacuma bereits 2008 im Rahmen des 2.
AlpenJazz-Festivals und begeisterte die Zuschauer
mit seinem außergewöhnlichen Bassspiel.
Seinem künstlerischen und experimentellen Zugang
zur Musik treu bleibend, begeistert Jamaaladeen
Tacuma weiterhin Fans auf der ganzen Welt.
JEAN-PAUL BOURELLY
Bourelly is an adventurous musician with vast
creative experience started his career as leader in
1986 with the band BluWave Bandits which hosted many
talented musicians such as drummers Rodney Holmes,
Alfredo Alias, Rolling Stone bassists Darryle Jones,
Melvin Gibbs and Reggie Washington. Born in Chicago
in 1960 and raised by Hatian/American parents, he
landed in New York in 1979. Since then he recorded
11 solo cd's as a leader with various groups such as
the Vibe music and Boom Bop groups. A master at
bending musical genres, Jean-Paul Bourelly's music
has to do with re-shaping Black music forms like
jazz, blues and rock though the scope of the
diaspora experince. This rhythmic, ambient brew is
given further dimensions by his Haitian/American
roots.
WADUD AHMAD
Wadud speaks poetic music with the vibrations of a
captivatingly deep baritone voice. His work has been
published in various anthologies with the likes of
Maya Angelou, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni and
Amiri Baraka to name a few. He has recorded several
musical projects, written music for The Cosby Show,
and is featured as a poetic part of the Philadelphia
based hip-hop group The Roots. "I try to make
art that connects with the human soul and causes the
individual to both think and feel..." (Wadud)
DARYL KWASI BURGEE
Daryl Kwasi Burgee professional career spans more
than thirty years. As a native of Philadelphia, his
unique ability covers a wide variety of drum styles
and techniques from various parts of the world.
Burgee has been playing drum sets from the age of
six year old. His early development started in soul,
R&B, and funk music. He quickly became
passionate about Jazz and traditional West African
music. Daryl spent many years studying the styles
and techniques of West African drumming and music;
now he is considered to be one of the leading
educators in traditional arts and culture in the
city of Philadelphia.
Burgee has played on over 250 recordings, majority
of the records achieving gold and platinum status,
with many different artists. This includes Grover
Washingtion Jr., Patty Lebelle, Sheena Easton,
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass,
Stephanie Mills, Gladys Knight, Vanesa Williams, The
O'Jays, Gerald Levert, Kool and the Gang, Loose Ends,
Gerald Veasley, Jeff Lee Johnson, Ornette Coleman,
Jean Paul Bourelly, Phyllis Hyman, Rochelle Ferrell,
Rick James, Teena Marie and Steve Wonder. Daryl
developed and produced his own R&B group called
Cashmere. In 2003 Daryl was featured with Bill Cosby
on the David Letterman Show and has made several
recordings with Bill Cosby as well.
In 1998 Burgee was asked to perform with The
Philadelphia Orchestra in the production African
Portraits. Directed by Andre Raphael Smith and
composed by Hannibal Lokumbe. For seven years he was
the chief coordinator of traditional music for the
Africa Americas Festival and Parade. He also has
many collaborative projects with jazz greats like
Jamaaladeen Tacuma, David Murray, Doudou Ndiaye Rose
and Zakir Hussain. Burgee background includes years
of research in West African music as well as Cuban
folklore and Caribbean music. Due to his experience
in African drumming he is the founder and artistic
director of Spoken Hand a percussion orchestra and
Jaasu Ballet African Dance.
He has been an artist in residence in the
Philadelphia School District for fifteen years and
has taught in schools throughout the Delaware
Valley, as well as nationally and internationally.
In 1999, Burgee was invited to Kingston and Montego
Bay Jamaica and the University of Virgin Islands in
St. Thomas to lecture on African and Caribbean music
and also to give a series of workshops. With all his
accomplishments throughout the years Burgee is
continuing to bring new ideas to the field of music.
